As you may have read here, Jon has suggested we take on the discussion concerning the magi's individual duties OOC. Shall we try it? Ideally, I think it would be best to have each individual magus de facto responsible for a certain task/series of task/area of influence. Here's what I came up with when considering "genres" within the game (feel free to dispute/suggest/modify): - Mundane Politics, Mundane Economics
- Hermetic Politics, Hermetic Economics, Hermetic Raiding
- Faerie
- Infernal
- The Church, Mundane Scholars
- Hedge Traditions
These could be further broken into smaller pieces. Hermetic politics might be split into Normandy Politics and Order of Hermes Politics, for example. Not sure what would be best.
Let's talk and see what we can come up with!
Please consider your own interests as a player and your magus' interests as well.
Also, keep in mind that you as a player would participate in all stories, whether as a magus, companion or grog.

Jason can cover the Church and Mundane scholars, as he's the one who would be interacting with them on a regular basis, as a Magister in Artibus.

I could see Benoit being interested in the following in order of preference or interest.
Faerie Hedge Traditions Mundane Politics Mundane Economics Hermetic Economics Hermetic Politics Hermetic Raiding

After returning to the covenant with the new Guardians, Benoit would approach Atticus and request that a new Office be created for Mons Mercurius. He would refer to the Office as Ventus Desiderium (Desire of the Wind). If given the chance to make his case to the council, he would explain that every covenant could benefit from such an office. That the responsibilities of the Office would include questing for allies, resources, items of power, knowledge, and other things according to specific needs of the covenant.
(I did not open a thread for this topic because I didn't really expect a lot of drama or debate to come from it. If I am wrong and some would like to engage in some interesting discussion on this topic...perhaps elaborating more on the Offices' responsibilities, or other interesting twists, then it can quickly be moved to an IC thread. Benoit would even offer his services to specific magi in some instances, but under those conditions he would want to barter for a Vis reward. Thoughts?)

Atticus is by no means opposed to the creation of the office, but he would like it to be more well-defined so it does not overlap with other Office's responsibilities.
He will argue that since your current Interpres is absent, that perhaps the position can be temporarily dissolved and that its duties be reassigned among the other offices, Ventus Desiderium included. In particular, he suggests offering the Ventus Desiderium the duties of interacting with the Faerie on behalf of the covenant, seeing as Benoit has a faerie IN his sanctum at all times.
This is the final Office as he proposes it:
Ventus Desiderium: The Ventus is the magus responsible for acquiring difficult things for the covenant, particularly if these quests involve significant travel away from Mons Mercurius. These quests are decided upon by the Council, but either of the other Officers may request him to acquire something that pertains to their duties. These requests must be met unless the Ventus brings the issue to the Council, whereupon the Council's decision is final. Likewise, the Ventus may embark on quests of his own volition, provided he has the approval of at least one other Officer, so that at all times at least two Officers agree upon the need for a quest. Furthermore, because of his extended travelling through wild and dangerous areas, the Ventus speaks for the covenant when dealing with the Faerie.
How does that sound, Joe?

Just as a formal follow-up to Atticus' proposal Benoit would accept the amendments with joy.

Hey Jon
I wasn't sure where to post this so I figured this was as good as any place. Benoit would obviously approach Jason and ask him to create a Longevity Potion for him (with Benoit's aid of course) within the next 2 to 4 years if possible. We can bump this post IC if you want otherwise it's just a matter of what Jason might want in return.

Here's a breakdown of how this can work for Benoit. I think I covered all of the angles.
Jason will charge 4 pawns of Vis form, or 2 pawns vis tenta (technique) to create the ritual, which is pretty cheap[1]. Benoit will need to supply the vis for the ritual above and beyond the price Jason's charging to create the ritual. Jason's Magic Theory score is 4, with a corpus specialty, so that allows him to handle up to 10 pawns of Corpus Vis in a season, so all of the vis for the Longevity Ritual must be corpus, or he can't do it. Benoit's current age is 43, meaning his ritual requires 43/5, rounds up to 9 pawns of vis.
Jason's Lab total for Creo Corpus, before bonuses from assistants, is Creo 12 + Corpus 20+3 +Int 3 + Magic Theory 4+1 + Aura 2 + lab 5 + lab routine (early riser) 1 for a grand total of 51. With assistance from Benoit and Helena it's 61, which creates a 13th magnitude Longevity Ritual, which is exactly the same power as Jason's. All yours for the low, low price of 16 pawns of vis, 9 corpus for the ritual, and 7 of some other agreed upon form for Jason's fee.
For lab work, Jason has Leadership 1 (lab work), so he can handle 2 assistants in the lab. Helena and Benoit can assist. Helena's bonus at the time will be +4: Int 2, Magic Theory 2 +1 Corpus specialty -1 due to age. Benoit adds Int 2 + Magic Theory 4, for a total bonus from assistants of 10. Helena's involvement is non-negotiable, it's part of her training. On the other hand, Benoit doesn't have assist in the creation of his Longevity Ritual, he must be present for the entire season, so he could read or study a book in Jason's lab. Should he choose to not assist in his own LR the magnitude drops to 11, or if one more pawn of Corpus vis is used (total of 10 pawns in the LR), an LR 12. This applies until Benoit is 45, once he's 46, the ritual would cost 10 pawns, and Jason wouldn't be able to put any extra vis into the ritual. Or he could also convince someone else to assist Jason in the LR, but that would be a favor that Benoit needs to procure and not Jason.
Benoit can't do his own Longevity Ritual, because his LR requires 9 pawns of vis, and his Magic theory score is only 4, meaning he can only handle 8 pawns of vis. But below, I discuss the possibility of Benoit raising Magic Theory to 5, which he's really close to doing, with just 3 more XP. Assuming he gets his MT to 5 before he turns 46, his lab total would be Creo 8 + Corpus 4 + Int 2 + Magic Theory 5 + Aura 2 + Quiver 4=25. That's a 5th magnitude LR, but he could also add another pawn of vis, hitting his Magic Theory cap of 10 pawns, and it would add another +1 to the lab total for 26, which when divided by 5 and rounded up is LR 6. So for another 7 pawns, Benoit can get a Longevity that is twice as effective as the one he can make for himself.
[1]The vis can be on credit, but we need to decide on the type. Alternatively, instead of vis it could be seasons of covenant service done on Jason's behalf, but the cost in covenant service seasons is 3 seasons.

In the next Council Meeting Atticus proposes that Afonso be allowed to sell Hermetic Books as Covenant work, and asks for a way to quantitatively measure it so he can be properly remunerated as all other members.
(Give me suggestions, please! I was thinking something like 2 books per 6 seasons minimum... But that doesn't account for coyping the books, which Afonso can't do. Not sure how to tackle it, but I think Afonso deserves a Vis Income of sorts...)

This would be Nimrod´s suggestion: every 6 seasons we tally how many books Afonso sold. 1 book is worth 0, 2-3 worth 1 pawn, 3-6 worth 2 pawns, +1 if any book sold is a summa, +1 if the trades result in worthwhile additions to our own library (judged by yours truly). If he earned 2 or more pawns he may request to receive this vis in the form of a lesser enchanted device, which is in turn considered a service to the covenant by the enchanting magi.
This way, he argues, (1) Afonso can purchase magical items at more accessible prices and (2) we likely expand our own library.

Do we have a sufficient mechanism to manufacture books in the quantities sold? We don't have any scribes who know magic theory, so it involves the time of a magus to do this, so I don't think it is possible now. I was considering having Helena teach a scribe or a few Magic Theory, but that is some time off. Instead of a vis income, per se, which should be handled by House Mercere, and not us, I think we need to provide him some services that cost vis (such as a Longevity Ritual) but not pay him in vis.
The trouble a non magus character has in making vis income, is that they need to discover and harvest heretofore unknown or forgotten vis sources, or be able to make lucrative trades. With our ample vis stores, I'd be more inclined to have Nimrod do trading on our behalf and keep some (not all) of the profits. When our capability to produce books is ready we can add that to his compensation.
In character: "Atticus, with all due respect, this is a bit premature, we do not have scribes capable of copying our books, and so it would require covenant service from a magus, first, to make a book ready. How much of our covenant service must now be tied up in copying books to be sold? I propose we table this specific matter now and instead discuss how we get ourselves ready to make copies of Hermetic tomes. Further, in the interests of having Afonso earn a vis income, I suggest that we have Nimrod explore trading opportunities,at prices that are a bit lower than House Mercere's. The covenant and he will both enjoy the profits of such an endeavor. At the end of the season, we determine how much our vis stores have grown due to trading and give him some measure of that as his vis wage."
